-The EDMUND FITZGERALD-
A fine sea level view of the
FITZ
up bound, without cargo, on the St. Marys River in 1967. St. Marys River connects Lake Superior and Lake Huron and forms a portion of the international boundary between the U.S. and Canada. The
FITZ
like many cargo vessels, used this river as a partial transport to and from the Great Lakes iron ore processing plants.
Owned and operated by the Northwestern Mutual Insurance Co., Milwaukee, WI., and named after its President, the
FITZGERALD
was built in 1958 at River Rouge, Michigan, by the Great Lakes
Engineering Works and mostly ran iron ore on the Lakes to Detroit for
the Engine Works of the Auto Industry there.
On November 10, 1975 at approximately 7:10 pm, about 17 miles north-northwest of Whitefish Point, the
FITZGERALD
foundered during a severe gale that pounded her with 70 knot winds, and
25 foot waves. Earlier on her captain reported several times how tons
of water washed over her deck and challenged her buoyancy. Finally her
sinking was so quick that no radio message was given though she had
been in frequent visual and radio contact with the steamer
ARTHUR M. ANDERSON
. The
FITZGERALD
disappeared from sight in a furious snow squall and then from radar.
All 29 officers and crew, including a Great Lakes Maritime Academy
cadet, went down with the ship, which lies broken in two sections in
530 feet of water.
Known as the "Queen of the Great Lakes" -- and thought to be indestructible, the story of the
EDMUND FITZGERALD
inspired Canadian songwriter Gordon Lightfoot to write "The Wreck of
the Edmund Fitzgerald," a haunting ballad that launched a legend.
Three decades later, the saga remains so intriguing that the shipwreck
has become known as "the Titanic of the Great Lakes", and is just one
-- although the most famous -- of some 6,000 known Great Lakes
shipwrecks that together have claimed 30,000 lives.
